For an electric portable water filter, this thing is pretty light. But there are lighter options on the market that are not electric. Katadyn and Platypus might be the better light weight option. Otherwise it is the lightest electric filter on the market.

What about cleaning and storage?

There are quite a few steps to clean and back-flush. but fortunately the instructions are straightforward and easy to read. But as with most filters, a clean dry place to dry thoroughly.

Good Tool For Preppers?

From a preppers standpoint, this may not be the best type of filter because it depends on electricity to operate. Could it work, yes. I would say this is a little more of a convenience product when you need to filter more than a liter or 2 (think gallons).
